Our Story
My connection with animals began long before Jay Aviaries Farm existed. From around the age of six, I spent weekends and vacations visiting my maternal and paternal grandparents in rural Puerto Rico, where both families had farms. I loved helping care for the animals, and those early experiences taught me responsibility, discipline, and respect for them from a very young age.
When I was about eleven years old, my mother gave me my first pair of budgerigars—one green and one blue. That simple gift sparked something that would eventually become a lifelong passion. Later, she gave me a male gray cockatiel whose personality I still remember vividly. Whenever an ambulance passed through town with its siren on, he would imitate the sound with his whistle.
My older brother later brought me a young pearl cockatiel and a green lovebird from Miami. The cockatiel still needed to be hand-fed, so I finished raising it myself. At the time, I didn’t know the terminology behind color mutations or genetics—but I knew one thing: this was what I wanted to do.

As I entered my teenage years, my interest in exotic birds grew even stronger. I frequently visited my godparents, and my godfather raised different farm animals as well as exotic birds. Being around his animals and observing his work inspired me even more and helped shape the direction I wanted to take.
Once I began working and could afford birds of my own, I purchased my first pair of Indian Ringnecks—a green male and a Lutino female. That marked the beginning of a journey that grew from a hobby into a passion, and eventually into Jay Aviaries Farm.
My fascination with genetics and color mutations pushed me to learn everything I could. At the time, much of the information I needed wasn’t readily available in Spanish, so I purchased books on Indian Ringneck genetics and worked through them despite not yet being fluent in English. I also spent countless hours researching online and learning from experienced breeders. That experience taught me something I still believe today: when you are truly passionate about something and willing to put in the work, obstacles do not have to become limits.
From Passion to Purpose
What began as a childhood fascination with birds eventually became something much greater. Jay Aviaries Farm was built on the belief that breeding should never be about producing as many birds as possible. It should be about responsibility, patience, knowledge, and an uncompromising commitment to the well-being and quality of every bird.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to meet and learn from many breeders. Those experiences strengthened my desire to do things differently—to build a breeding program where decisions are made with purpose, where quality is pursued generation after generation, and where the welfare of the birds always comes before profit.
That commitment has sometimes required sacrifice. There have been times when I chose to go without things I wanted personally because my birds needed something more important. For me, that is simply part of the responsibility we accept when animals depend on us.
What Quality Means to Us
At Jay Aviaries Farm, quality is never defined by a single characteristic. Size matters, but so do health, strength, feather condition, structure, and the overall presence of the bird. From the beak to the tips of the toes, we want to see a bird that reflects excellent care, thoughtful breeding, and exceptional physical qualities.
Selective breeding plays an important role in achieving that standard. We carefully evaluate characteristics such as size, feather markings, physical traits, reproductive performance, and genetics when selecting birds for future generations. When we identify a trait we believe can be improved, we selectively work with birds that demonstrate those qualities and evaluate the results generation after generation.
There are no shortcuts. Selective breeding requires patience, observation, record-keeping, and sometimes years of work before the desired characteristics become consistent. But when the result is a healthy, powerful bird whose beauty and presence immediately capture your attention, the wait is worth it.
Our Principles
The well-being of our birds comes first. Always. We do not believe in breeding without limits, overworking breeding pairs, or making decisions based solely on profit. Every bird deserves proper care, rest, respect, and an environment where it can thrive.
We believe honesty and trust must be earned through actions. When we represent a bird as carrying a particular genetic trait or mutation, our reputation stands behind that information. A new customer may not know us well enough to trust us immediately—and we understand that. Trust develops when our words are proven through our actions, time after time.
We also believe that experience should create humility, not arrogance. Aviculture is a lifelong learning process. We respect the knowledge and experience of other breeders, remain open to learning, and believe knowledge should be shared responsibly.
Above all, we respect nature. Birds are not simply products or breeding stock. They are living animals entrusted to our care. Sometimes, to truly understand what they need, we have to stop thinking only from our perspective and learn to see the world through theirs.
Our Commitment to You
Our responsibility does not end when a bird finds its new home. We believe every customer deserves honesty, clear communication, and knowledgeable guidance before, during, and after the process of acquiring a bird from Jay Aviaries Farm.
Before placing a bird, we want to understand the prospective owner’s experience, expectations, and background with birds. Our goal is not to sell simply for the sake of making a sale. If we do not believe a placement is appropriate for the bird, we are willing to decline the sale. Finding the right home will always be more important than completing a transaction.
Questions do not stop after a bird goes home—and neither does our support. When customers have questions or concerns, we make every effort to guide them, share our experience, and help them make informed decisions. We want every customer to feel that they found not only the bird they were looking for, but also a breeder they can continue to trust.
Preparing Birds for Their New Homes
Every young bird deserves the best possible start before joining its new family. Our goal is to prepare each bird carefully, with attention to health, socialization, good habits, and confidence around people. We believe that preparation during these early stages can make an important difference in the transition to a new home.
When a bird is offered as fully weaned, it must be eating independently and confidently before leaving our care. We do not believe in rushing this process simply to complete a sale. Each bird develops at its own pace, and its readiness—not a deadline—determines when it is prepared to go home.
Our goal is simple: when your bird leaves Jay Aviaries Farm, we want both you and the bird to be prepared for the best possible beginning together.
Our Mission
Our mission is to raise exceptional birds through responsible breeding, integrity, knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to their well-being. We strive to continually improve the quality of our birds through thoughtful selective breeding while providing our customers with honest guidance, education, and support.
We also believe aviculture carries a responsibility beyond our own aviaries. Conservation matters to us, and we hope that the knowledge, experience, and resources we develop through the years can contribute in some meaningful way to the preservation of birds for future generations.
One of our greatest aspirations is to someday have the opportunity to contribute to conservation efforts involving the Puerto Rican Amazon, working alongside the appropriate wildlife and conservation authorities. For us, that would represent something much greater than breeding—it would be an opportunity to give something back to the birds and to Puerto Rico.
